More Arrogance and Disrespect From Washington

The 13th District Candidates’ Forum, hosted by the Brunswick Community, included Democrat Justin Wooden; and Republicans James Brihan, Bill Haney, Jim Hrubik, Jason Meade and Todd Sharkey.  By most accounts the event was a success and a credit to the efforts of the Brunswick community.

“The moderators were great. I liked that they let the candidates ask each other questions. This kept it from being one big hug-fest with everyone agreeing on everything,” P. Bolyard – via meetup.com

Where was Betty Sutton that night?  Absent as usual.  Being absent from the district is nothing new…

LaPrensaToledo.com April 14, 2010

“Democrats Betty Sutton: Speaking on her behalf was Liz Walters, field representative, as Sutton did not attend the forum because she was needed in Washington, D.C. Incumbent Sutton is serving…“

This time, this story has a little twist. It started behind the scenes on the morning of April 21.

In an email sent to Brunswick Mayor Gary Werner, Jason Fink, Sutton’s Scheduler, announced that Congresswoman Sutton was unavailable and would be sending a proxy, Liz Walters, to read a prepared statement during the event.

In response to his email, Fink was told that the event was “a candidates’ forum, not a surrogates’ forum,” and organizers would not allow candidate representatives to read prepared statements during the event.   Fink was also told that changing the forum’s format would be unfair to the participating candidates.

This response hit a nerve with Sutton’s staff, because a very short time later, aggressive phone calls were placed from Washington to Mayor Werner and Vice Mayor Patrick.  In one call, Sutton’s Chief of Staff, Nichole Reynolds, said that she was upset with the forum policy and felt that the Mayor had not properly considered Sutton’s schedule when planning the event.

This is a good time to point out that planners of the event had contacted Sutton’s office not one, but twice, in the previous two months.  Each time, they invited the congresswoman to participate in the forum.  There was no response from Sutton’s office until the day of the event.

In a follow-up email, Nichole wrote: “We regret that you will not permit this [proxy speaker] to take place and allow the people to at least hear from their representative.”

That evening, one of Sutton’s representatives, who was in attendance, complained that Brunswick had made last minute changes concerning the use of surrogates.  He went on to insinuate that the Mayor had poorly planned the event’s timing.

To make such accusations against the host was in poor taste. Brunswick made every effort to include Sutton in the event.  What remains to be answered is why Sutton felt the sudden need to jump in the forum at the last moment.  Why didn’t her office contact Brunswick sooner? If she is so concerned about the people hearing from their representative, she might consider spending some time in the district and actually talking to her constituents instead of leaving it to her assistants.

“The Mayor and Vice Mayor, Republican and Democrat, did an outstanding job with the event. It was quick, it was informative and original in its application. Obviously considerable forethought was put into this event, and I truly believe that this debate served the interests of civil discourse, the city of Brunswick and the 13th district as a whole. My hat’s off to the Mayor and Vice Mayor for their professionalism in the face of immature antics and tantrums!” – Justin Wooden

“This simply shows a shockingly arrogant lack of respect by the Party endorsed candidates to both the City of Brunswick and the voters of the 13th Congressional District.  I am very disappointed in both.” – Jason Meade

THE EVENT – More intimidation

The forum began at 7PM with the candidate seated at the front of the room.  Two seats were left empty, one each for Sutton and Ganley.

Some at the event felt security was higher than normal for such a small program and wondered if Police were expecting a problem. The Mayor’s office dismissed this and said Police were simply expecting a larger crowd.

About an hour into the forum, a noisy group of Sutton supporters entered the room.  Each wearing a Betty Sutton campaign sticker and many wore clothing identifying themselves as union members.  The group is believed to have come from a Democrat meeting held that evening at the nearby library.

One attendee reported that only moments before the Sutton Supporters entered the room, the congresswoman’s Field Representative, Elizabeth Walters took a phone call and walked out with Mark Derrick to where the Sutton supporters would latter enter.

“[They] showed up 3/4 of the way through the evening and loudly made their way into the room, some to seats in the front row. After a few minutes, most of them left, again, noisily. A couple of them stuck around to rant to members of the crowd about healthcare or whatever their issues were. It was very, very odd!” – P Bolyard – via meetup.com

“They came in with an attitude intent on intimidating everyone there.” – Tom Fenske.

In an orchestrated move, one of the Sutton supporters, wearing a UAW jacket, emerged from the crowd and moved to the front of the room.  After a short period of standing, the man took a seat in the first row.

“He looked like he wanted a confrontation.” – Tom Fenske.*

“[He was] kind of menacing, sitting forward in his chair and shaking his head, glaring and making gagging gestures,” Steve S.

The man spent much of his time looking with hostility toward the Mayor and Vice Mayor.  At one point, Mayor Werner had to gesture to this man to keep  quiet after the man had shouted, “That’s just your opinion!” at one of the candidates.

At that time a Brunswick police officer quietly positioned himself between the man and the mayor.  While the UAW man’s actions seemed quite deliberate and intent on disrupting the event, he failed to do so.  The mayor didn’t miss a beat, and kept the forum moving smoothly to its conclusion.

Did Sutton’s staff call in these union thugs?  Did they arrive with the intent of disrupting the event?   There is certainly a resemblance to the pair of recent events where Sutton is known to have used unions to intimidate her opposition.

Connections aside, the big question remains: Where was Betty?  Why hasn’t she been able to sit down with the public in the last two years for a face-to-face meeting? The excuse of having to be in DC for legislative work, does not explain her appalling absence for the last 4 years. Nor does it explain her ability to pop into the district for a press conference earlier this week, or as keynote speaker at the 24th Ohio Employee Ownership Conference on Friday April 30 at the Hilton Akron/Fairlawn.

Betty will not face the people in an open forum, and it is time for the congresswoman to say why.

Perhaps Jason Meade said it best, it is an “arrogant lack of respect.”

Sutton-oleum Rust Panel In Washington

Betty Sutton assembles expert panel to talk about rust.

Liberalism always generates the exact opposite of its stated intent.
- Quinn’s Laws of Liberalism

Thank the heavens, we have Congresswoman Sutton looking after us. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the representative assembled a panel of Ohio experts on Wednesday to describe how preemptive efforts to fix corroded roads, bridges and other infrastructure could create jobs and improve safety.

“When a bridge rusts away and collapses or when water mains break, filling our streets with water, we’ll read about corrosion, but by then it’s too late.” – Betty Sutton.

Betty, who has yet to hold a public town hall, is seeking legislation that will stick the federal government’s grubby hands even deeper into our lives by requiring states to spend money on rust mitigation and prevention plans for public projects before they are completed.

I have to ask, Betty, did you really need to call in a panel of experts to understand that rust destroys metal? Was it difficult to conclude that anti-corrosive products prevent corrosion?

If you don’t mind, when you have finished creating all these new anti-corrosion jobs, could you come up with a plan for the men and woman who currently make their living dealing with the effects of rust.

Good grief.

Stormy Morning Warning

January 30th, 2010

Betty Sutton awarded "Stormy Morning" by Suburbanite

Betty "Tax & Spend" Sutton Recognized As "Stormy Morning Warning"

Negative fall out over Sutton’s inappropriate use of our money continues.   Columnist Frank Weaver, Jr. of the Suburbanite took a big swing at Sutton today in his column, “Outtakes Around The Lakes: Stormy Morns and Starry Nights

“Stormy Morning Warning” goes to Ohio’s 13th U.S. Congressional Representative, Democrat Betty Sutton. During these trying times of economic recession, Sutton mails a self-promoting, six page, full color flyer to everyone in the district embellishing her support for last summer’s Cash for Clunkers program. And she does it at the taxpayers expense.

Less than a week later Sutton blows her horn again. She publicly shows her chutzpah by repeating her Cash for Clunkers support and a few other pet causes in a second mailed flyer. Same self promotion, same number of pages, same full color flyer and again at the taxpayers’ expense. Reportedly, these mail outs cost taxpayers well over $100,000 at a time when unemployment in Ohio is nearly 11 percent and the poverty level even higher. Her self promoting “campaign” literature at the taxpayers’ cost rankled many including yours truly. And you wonder why so many voters reject new and renewal levies. Shame on Sutton.

Suburbanite 1/30/2010

As reported by Sutton’s office, the actual cost for the “Look At Me” mailings was $118,838, not including staff labor.

This story isn’t over yet.

Ohio Recovery Prediction

Betty Sutton's Slow Recovery

Betty Sutton's Slow Recovery

Ohio’s top CPAs responding to the seventh annual Ohio Business Poll have pushed back their earlier prediction by one year for when a sustainable U.S. economic recovery will begin.

Ohio unemployment rates have not yet peaked

About a third (36%) of respondents to the poll, conducted by The Ohio Society of CPAs (OSCPA), predict a sustainable recovery to start in the second half of 2010, while 26% put the turnaround in the first half of 2011. In the 2008 poll, the overwhelming majority of poll participants forecast a sustainable recovery coming in the last half of 2009 or the first half of 2010 (62%).

In addition, 65% of CPAs responding this year felt Ohio unemployment rates have not yet peaked. Nearly half (48%) believe it could take up to four years for the state to return to pre-recession unemployment  levels of 5.8% recorded in December 2007.

Respondents were ambivalent concerning the effectiveness of the national stimulus packages at creating and retaining jobs in Ohio, with 26% saying the stimulus packages were neither effective nor ineffective and 23% responding that they were somewhat effective.

A Demonstration of Quinn’s Law: Liberals never think what they are doing is wrong, they only think they haven’t done enough of it yet

Betty Sutton, clearly the best choice for a job creation task force.

Betty Sutton, clearly the best choice for a job creation task force.

The economic stimulus bill, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, was signed into law on Feb. 17, 2009.  Betty and her cohorts promised it would help bring about a recovery for the slumping economy.   So, how is this promised help working out for OH-13? Let’s look at two numbers from recovery.gov, a website created by the Obama administration to track the recovery efforts.

Betty Sutton has spent $153,496,938.00 of recovery money in the district.   Her spending spree has created 149.5  jobs.  After a little quick math, that seems to work out to 1.26 million dollars per job.  Well done, Betty!

Back in February Betty had this to say:

“The Recovery and Reinvestment Act is simple – it is about putting our people back to work and reinvigorating our economy. The need for this legislation could not be more important. America’s families are hurting. Last month, our country lost nearly 600,000 jobs and unemployment in our country has reached a staggering 7.2 percent. These are not statistics – these are hardworking Americans who are now struggling to pay their bills, provide for their children and who are wondering how they can afford health insurance. Today’s legislation is aimed squarely at restoring the promise of the middle class to our hard-working families.

Ohio has been hit particularly hard, with a statewide unemployment rate of 7.8%. Today’s legislation is expected to save or create 133,000 jobs throughout Ohio, providing families with the opportunity to regain or obtain wages they need and desire. It also provides our state with necessary resources to help stabilize the local economy and address other challenges. Ohio’s schools will receive approximately $2.7 billion for necessary school improvements and programs for our children. Our state will also receive over $3 billion in federal funding for Medicaid, ensuring that our most vulnerable citizens receive the healthcare they need and deserve.”

This is Congresswoman Sutton from today. Democrats work on multibillion-dollar jobs package L.A. Times

“The stimulus boosted employment but did it in a way that was not as highly visible as a lot of people would like.  It did so in somewhat of a scattershot approach — a job here and a job there, trickled out over time. . . . Far too many Americans are without a job, and far too many more are worried about what tomorrow is going to bring.”

Since the stimulus bill was enacted in February, the United States has lost 2.8 million jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  Job losses increased in 29 states, including Ohio, last month.  Ohio’s Department of Job and Family Services reported that the state’s unemployment rate rose to 10.5 percent in October, up from 10.1 percent in September.

Now President Obama, Betty Sutton and the Democratic majority in Congress are assembling a new jobs package that would devote billions of additional dollars to projects meant to put people back on payrolls in 2010 and keep them working.

All of this is proof that Betty Sutton is the perfect choice to co-chair a task force on job creation.  Let’s just hope the other guy knows what he’s doing.

Morning Journal Editorial Takes Betty To Task

Morning Journal Editorial Takes Betty To Task

The following was published as part of an opinion piece on The Morning Journal website:

[ Click For Full Story ]

Passage of the massive and ill-conceived Democratic health reform bill in the U.S. House of Representatives came this past weekend with the help of Lorain County’s two representatives Betty Sutton and Marcy Kaptur, both Democrats. Kaptur also represents Erie County.

We hope for their sake those two will be fortunate enough to see this nanny state vision of health reform come to naught in the Senate, as appears likely. The goal of affordable health care for all is laudable, but even the House bill would not have delivered that result.

The House bill, if it were to become law, would initiate a process of government engulfing your life, making you dependent on government programs, and suffocating your independence.

Fortunately, at this point, it appears the House health reform plan will hit a stone wall of opposition in the Senate. But nothing can be taken for granted. Everything American is at stake.

Improve America’s vitality, do not smother its spirit.

Betty Sutton - Pwned

Betty Sutton - Pwned

Back on September 20th, we noticed that Betty Sutton was mysteriously predictably missing from a Columbus Dispatch article by Jonathan Riskind.  The Dispatch had asked the 18 members of the Ohio congressional delegation to answer the following question:

Do you think more U.S. troops are needed in Afghanistan? When will the United States know whether the mission has succeeded and U.S. troops can withdraw from Afghanistan?

Every member of the delegation managed to muster an answer except… you guessed it: BETTY SUTTON.

dispatch

Looks like we were no the only constituents to notice the representative’s absence.

Meet Mr. Calta.  On Sept. 21 he e-mailed Rep. Sutton to ask why she failed to respond to the Dispatch questions.  In true Sutton style, Calta was ignored!  Then, on Oct. 5, he sent a follow-up e-mail to Sutton’s office and got… NOTHING.

Akron.com West Side Leader – Now more than a month has transpired; I have received no feedback from her or her office whatsoever. I am a military veteran and am extremely concerned about our nation’s approach to our effort in Afghanistan, even more so now than last month. I truly want an answer from Rep. Sutton regarding her position in this matter. I am extremely disappointed that I have had no reply whatsoever.

Join the club.

For taking Betty to task in the West Side Leader, this week’s Pwn award goes to, Dick Calta.

C4C Belly Flop!

October 6th, 2009

Government spending creates NO new wealth!  Congresswoman Betty Sutton’s Cash for Clunkers program is just another great example.

Betty SUtton's C4C Plan

Betty Sutton's C4C Plan For October

“This is the one stimulus program that seems to be working better than just about any other program.” – Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood

From: Online Wall Street Journal

Last week U.S. automakers reported that new car sales for September, the first month since the clunker program expired, sank by 25% from a year earlier. Sales at GM and Chrysler fell by 45% and 42%, respectively. Ford was down about 5%. Some 700,000 cars were sold in the summer under the program as buyers received up to $4,500 to buy a new car they would probably have purchased anyway, so all the program seems to have done is steal those sales from the future. Exactly as critics predicted.

The basic fallacy of cash for clunkers is that you can somehow create wealth by destroying existing assets that are still productive, in this case cars that still work. Under the program, auto dealers were required to destroy the car engines of trade-ins with a sodium silicate solution, then smash them and send them to the junk yard. As the journalist Henry Hazlitt wrote in his classic, “Economics in One Lesson,” you can’t raise living standards by breaking windows so some people can get jobs repairing them.

Betty, Nice work!

Sutton’s Green Plan

Betty Sutton's Cash For Clunkers - Green, but for who?

Oh Betty, is it true?  Were you really wrong, AGAIN?

Let’s take a look.

3/18/2009 DAILY NEWS: Rep. Betty Sutton introduces a cash-for-clunkers plan

“This is a very comprehensive bill with multiple beneficial effects that I think will make it palatable to enough of the Congress that we can enact it,” Sutton said Tuesday. “It not only assists consumers who need a lot of help in this economic downturn, but it will stimulate our economy, reduces emissions, and reduces our dependency on foreign oil.”

5/21/2009 Congress Woman Betty Sutton Press Release

helping consumers purchase more fuel efficient vehicles, helping boost sales of our domestic auto and related industries and helping our environment.I look forward to the swift passage of this measure on the House floor,” said Sutton.

6/09/2009 Cleveland.com: House adopts Rep. Betty Sutton’s “cash for clunkers” bill

“This bill is also about people,” Sutton enthused at a news conference after the bill’s passage. “It’s about the people who make those cars, who make the steel and iron that are used in those cars, it’s about the dealers, it’s about our environment, it’s about our economy, it’s about the strength of our nation.”

9/03/2009 Barberton Herald: Sutton is Clunker lady

Sutton said her goals with CARS, the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save act, was to help people buy new fuel efficient cars, reduce fuel use and provide a cleaner environment.

And now we learn the truth.

The following excerpt is from an online article by William Jeanes for AOL Auto.  In Cash for Clunkers Buyers Suffer Buyer’s Remorse, Jeanes points out the numerous flaws in Betty’s Cash For Clunkers (C4C) program.

Call me a naysayer, but I do not think adding individual household debt will lead us out of the financial wilderness. Nor will it, as applied in the C4C experiment, do much to lessen our dependence on fossil fuels. Quicker than you can say, “Holy statistics, Mr. Wizard,” the numbers nerds ascertained that the new vehicles sold under C4C will use more—not less—fuel than the beaters that were turned in and destroyed.

How can that be? Think of it on a personal level. Suppose you had a 10-year-old particulate belcher that, as the euphemism goes, needed work. Even if you lived in an Orlando suburb, you’d still be less than excited at the idea of piling the kids into it and lighting out for Disney World. But that new Malibu that gets a hell of a lot better mileage is a different kettle of green. You trust it; it’s economical; you drive it more. A lot more, according to another piece of research.

CNW surveyed drivers involved in the purchase of the first 239,000 C4C vehicles. The average intended annual mileage was 10,894, up from the actual clunker mileage of 6,162. For those of you without a calculator falling readily to hand, that’s nearly double.

But what about that miles-per-gallon improvement we were promised? Well, we got it. The average fuel economy reported by C4C buyers rose from 16.3 mpg for Old Dobbin to 24.8 for the new carriage. A monster step in the right direction. Add to that the over-90-percent reduction in tailpipe excretions and we’re still looking good, right?

Not as good as we might. The new car, because it’s new and fun and green and clean and smells good, will be given some 61 additional gallons each year by its grateful owner. For those first 239,000 C4C vehicles, that’s 14.6 million gallons that the clunkers wouldn’t have gobbled up. The approximately 700,000 total vehicles moved under the program will therefore use an additional 42 million gallons of fuel annually during the first years of ownership.

From increased consumer debt to a greater dependence on foreign oil – it does appear that Congresswoman Sutton gave us one clunker of a bill.

Betty, Considering how wonderfully your predictions of a greener auto fleet have stood up against the real world numbers, are you starting to understand why WE DON’T TRUST YOU?

Where’s Betty Sutton? Shame on the Columbus Dispatch

Betty Sutton “Speaks Out”: What should U.S. do? Ohio’s lawmakers weigh in on the Afghan war

Congresswoman Betty Sutton Takes a Well Deserved Rest

Congresswoman Sutton Takes a Well Deserved Rest.

After her landmark speech at the West Virginia Federation of Democratic Women’s annual meeting, Betty Sutton is certainly due for a period of rest and relaxation. It’s for this reason that I say pooh-pooh on you Jonathan Riskind and the Columbus Dispatch for pointing out that Betty Sutton failed to meet a deadline.

Not included

Rep. Betty Sutton, D-Akron, did not respond in time to include her comments.

If you, Mr. Riskind, or your paper were worth a dime, you would know that the representative of Ohio’s 13th district is quite busy representing our interests in far away places like West Virginia.   How can she possibly be expected to meet a ridiculous deadline from a rag like the Columbus Dispatch. Shame on you for not holding this article until Betty’s response arrived, however long that might have taken (at least three weeks in many cases).

Seriously, Betty, could you try to do a little less gallivanting around the countryside and be a bit more accessible? Look at the list of representatives who managed to respond to Jonathan Riskind’s simple question:

Rep. Steve Driehaus, OH-1 D
Rep. Jean Schmidt, OH-2 R
Rep. Mike Turner, OH-3 R
Rep. Jim Jordan, OH-4 R
Rep. Bob Latta, OH-5 R
Rep. Charlie Wilson, OH-6 D
Rep. Steve Austria, OH-7 R
Rep. John Boehner, OH-8 R
Rep. Marcy Kaptur, OH-9 D
Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich, OH-10 D
Rep. Marcia Fudge, OH-11 D
Rep. Pat Tiberi, OH-12 R
Rep. Betty Sutton, OH-13 D
Rep. Steven C. LaTourette, OH-14 R
Rep. Mary Jo Kilroy, OH-15 D
Rep. John Boccieri, OH-16 D
Rep. Tim Ryan, OH-17 D
Rep. Zack Space, OH-18 D

That’s right, ALL OF THEM ARE LISTED EXCEPT YOU! Every other representative managed to step up and make a statement.  What happened Betty?

The man was only asking for 250 words (or less). Are you really that busy? Or, could it be that you are just afraid to answer tough questions?
