More Arrogance and Disrespect From Washington

The 13th District Candidates’ Forum, hosted by the Brunswick Community, included Democrat Justin Wooden; and Republicans James Brihan, Bill Haney, Jim Hrubik, Jason Meade and Todd Sharkey.  By most accounts the event was a success and a credit to the efforts of the Brunswick community.

Where was Betty Sutton that night?  Absent as usual.  Being absent from the district is nothing new…

This time, this story has a little twist. It started behind the scenes on the morning of April 21.

In an email sent to Brunswick Mayor Gary Werner, Jason Fink, Sutton’s Scheduler, announced that Congresswoman Sutton was unavailable and would be sending a proxy, Liz Walters, to read a prepared statement during the event.

In response to his email, Fink was told that the event was “a candidates’ forum, not a surrogates’ forum,” and organizers would not allow candidate representatives to read prepared statements during the event.   Fink was also told that changing the forum’s format would be unfair to the participating candidates.

This response hit a nerve with Sutton’s staff, because a very short time later, aggressive phone calls were placed from Washington to Mayor Werner and Vice Mayor Patrick.  In one call, Sutton’s Chief of Staff, Nichole Reynolds, said that she was upset with the forum policy and felt that the Mayor had not properly considered Sutton’s schedule when planning the event.

This is a good time to point out that planners of the event had contacted Sutton’s office not one, but twice, in the previous two months.  Each time, they invited the congresswoman to participate in the forum.  There was no response from Sutton’s office until the day of the event.

In a follow-up email, Nichole wrote: “We regret that you will not permit this [proxy speaker] to take place and allow the people to at least hear from their representative.”

That evening, one of Sutton’s representatives, who was in attendance, complained that Brunswick had made last minute changes concerning the use of surrogates.  He went on to insinuate that the Mayor had poorly planned the event’s timing.

To make such accusations against the host was in poor taste. Brunswick made every effort to include Sutton in the event.  What remains to be answered is why Sutton felt the sudden need to jump in the forum at the last moment.  Why didn’t her office contact Brunswick sooner? If she is so concerned about the people hearing from their representative, she might consider spending some time in the district and actually talking to her constituents instead of leaving it to her assistants.

Obviously considerable forethought was put into this event, and I truly believe that this debate served the interests of civil discourse, the city of Brunswick and the 13th district as a whole. THE EVENT – More intimidation

The forum began at 7PM with the candidate seated at the front of the room.  Two seats were left empty, one each for Sutton and Ganley.

Some at the event felt security was higher than normal for such a small program and wondered if Police were expecting a problem. The Mayor’s office dismissed this and said Police were simply expecting a larger crowd.

About an hour into the forum, a noisy group of Sutton supporters entered the room.  Each wearing a Betty Sutton campaign sticker and many wore clothing identifying themselves as union members.  The group is believed to have come from a Democrat meeting held that evening at the nearby library.

One attendee reported that only moments before the Sutton Supporters entered the room, the congresswoman’s Field Representative, Elizabeth Walters took a phone call and walked out with Mark Derrick to where the Sutton supporters would latter enter.

“[They] showed up 3/4 of the way through the evening and loudly made their way into the room, some to seats in the front row. After a few minutes, most of them left, again, noisily. A couple of them stuck around to rant to members of the crowd about healthcare or whatever their issues were. It was very, very odd!” – P Bolyard – via meetup.com

“They came in with an attitude intent on intimidating everyone there.” – Tom Fenske.

In an orchestrated move, one of the Sutton supporters, wearing a UAW jacket, emerged from the crowd and moved to the front of the room.  After a short period of standing, the man took a seat in the first row.

“He looked like he wanted a confrontation.” – Tom Fenske.*

“[He was] kind of menacing, sitting forward in his chair and shaking his head, glaring and making gagging gestures,” Steve S.

The man spent much of his time looking with hostility toward the Mayor and Vice Mayor.  At one point, Mayor Werner had to gesture to this man to keep  quiet after the man had shouted, “That’s just your opinion!” at one of the candidates.

At that time a Brunswick police officer quietly positioned himself between the man and the mayor.  While the UAW man’s actions seemed quite deliberate and intent on disrupting the event, he failed to do so.  The mayor didn’t miss a beat, and kept the forum moving smoothly to its conclusion.

Did Sutton’s staff call in these union thugs?  Did they arrive with the intent of disrupting the event?   There is certainly a resemblance to the pair of recent events where Sutton is known to have used unions to intimidate her opposition.

Connections aside, the big question remains: Where was Betty?  Why hasn’t she been able to sit down with the public in the last two years for a face-to-face meeting? The excuse of having to be in DC for legislative work, does not explain her appalling absence for the last 4 years. Nor does it explain her ability to pop into the district for a press conference earlier this week, or as keynote speaker at the 24th Ohio Employee Ownership Conference on Friday April 30 at the Hilton Akron/Fairlawn.

Betty will not face the people in an open forum, and it is time for the congresswoman to say why.

Perhaps Jason Meade said it best, it is an “arrogant lack of respect.”

Bad News For Betty.

The Ohio Liberty Council’s Ohio Project petition language for State Nullification of Mandatory Participation of Nationalized Health Care has been given an OK.

Ohio Democratic Attorney General Richard Cordray has given the green light to a tea party ballot effort that will attempt to nullify the new health care law in the state.

Cordray, who earlier this week announced the state would not join 13 others in suing the federal government over the health care law, said his role in this decision is different.

“It’s not a matter of whether I agree or disagree, it’s not a matter of what I think of federal Constitutional law. It’s a matter of is this a fair and accurate summary and I didn’t want exceed my role,” he said.

A coalition of health care and anti-poverty advocates had urged Cordray to reject the ballot effort.

“They wanted me to block this, but I don’t have the authority under the law to do that,” Cordray said. “I’m not going to exceed my authority.  I am the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of the state and I need to set an example.  Whatever I may think, and whatever may be the outcome of the law, my role here was to certify as truthful and accurate and I believe it is a fair and accurate summary.”

Could there really be a way out of Betty Sutton’s individual mandate of Nationalized Health Care.

Yep.

The Ohio Liberty Council has been working on a solution.  They are pushing for an amendment to the Ohio constitution that will nullify the individual mandate of Nationalized Health Care for Ohioans. Twenty-Six other states have already taken this step, but Ohio has been unable to do it because House Speaker Armond Budish has stubbornly locked up the effort in committee.

The amendment will provide that:

In Ohio, no law or rule shall compel, directly or indirectly, any person, employer, or health care provider to participate in a health care system;
In Ohio, no law or rule shall prohibit the purchase or sale of health care or health insurance;
In Ohio, no law or rule shall impose a penalty or fine for the sale or purchase of health care or health insurance.

The amendment will not:

Affect laws or rules in effect as of March 19, 2010;
Affect which services a health care provider or hospital is required to perform or provide;
Affect terms and conditions of government employment;
Affect any laws calculated to deter fraud or punish wrongdoing in the health care industry.

On Monday the OLC delivered more than 3000 signatures from registered voters in 42 counties to Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner and Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray.  This kicks off the effort that, if successful, will protect the rights of Ohioans, and strengthen our State Sovereignty.

“The Ohio Liberty Council seeks to preserve the freedom of Ohioans to choose their healthcare and healthcare coverage,” said Ohio Liberty Council President Chris Littleton.  “With the passage of untenable national mandates on health insurance, the federal government is trampling on the direct constitutional authority and responsibility of state legislatures. This constitutional amendment will do what our leaders in the Statehouse have failed to do – protect Ohioans from federal mandates on personal behavior.”

“Obamacare significantly erodes individual liberties because of its severe penalties for non-compliance,” said 1851 Center Executive Director Maurice Thompson.  “The federal government – through the IRS –now has the power to levy tens of thousands of dollars in fines on individuals who do not purchase health insurance from government-sanctioned private providers.  The Ohio Liberty Council’s constitutional amendment will protect Ohioans from this draconian overreach.”

The CARS ( Cash For Clunkers ) program created wonderful results for a very limited number of Americans.  The legislation also gave a boost to the name recognition of an inexperienced representative from Ohio’s 13th district.   In case anyone in OH-13 had missed all the press coverage given to CARS, Congresswoman Betty Sutton graciously (at your expense) produced a spectacular multi-page, full color mailing to proclaim her own greatness.

If you were to believe the “Look-At-Me” mailings from early 2009, you might think the congresswoman had single handedly rescued the American auto industry from the brink of total destruction.  The reality, of course, is drastically different.  Sutton’s Cash For Clunkers program was nothing more than a quick high.  America, as it turns out, was the big loser at the end of Sutton’s program.  According to numbers provided by the CARS website, the big winners were foreign auto makers.

Bety Sutton Votes To Allow Federal Funding For Abortion

Today, the House took another shot at Congressman Stupak’s call for a ban on abortion funding in the health reform bill. The Stupak-Pitts amendment was agreed to with a vote of 240-194. Among the yeas were sixty-four Democrats. Not among the sixty-four, Ohio Representative Betty Sutton.

“Any lawmaker who votes against the Stupak-Pitts Amendment is, in effect, voting in favor of establishing a federal government program that will directly fund abortion on demand, with federal funds.” D. Johnson, legislative director of the National Right to Life Committee

In moments like this we see that actions really do speak louder than words. Congresswoman Sutton had yet another chance to stand behind her August Tele-Town-Hall statements, but instead slapped OH-13 with another bold faced lie. Sutton’s vote on Stupak-Pitts demonstrates her deep seeded belief that life and law are of little importance. Listen to her words from August 26th.

Obama Admin: Cap And Trade Could Cost Families $1,761 A Year

Ok, this makes me laugh a little.  When I called Sutton’s Washington office the evening of the Cap & Trade vote, the congresswoman’s staffer told me that numbers like these were highly inflated.  He even went as far as to suggest that such numbers were nothing more than lies from the bill’s opponents.  “In fact,” he said, “the congresswoman has looked at this carefully and believes it will only raise energy bills by less than a dollar per month.”

Oh, Betty, will you ever wake up and recognize that Ohio’s 13th isn’t in California?
