Betty Sutton Mail

All to often our questions and expressions of disappointment, concern, and outrage have gone unrecognized by Congresswoman Betty Sutton.  This is why we are extending an invitation for each of you to take part in the BettySutton2010 campaign.

Do you have something to say to the Congresswoman?  Copy us on your next email to Betty and we will post your letter right here where it is a little more difficult for her to ignore.  Have ideas for a future BettySutton2010 post?  Pictures of interest? Send them our way [ oh13@bettysutton2010.com ].  It is always open mic night at BettySutton2010.

An Afghanistan Answer, Almost.

November 18th, 2009

Betty Sutton Rides Political Fence

Betty Sutton Rides the Political Fence

Let’s start with the question posed by Jonathan Riskind and the Columbus Dispatch back on September 20th.  This is the same question constituent Dick Calta revisited in his November 5th  West Side Leader editorial.

Do you think more U.S. troops are needed in Afghanistan?

When will the United States know whether the mission has succeeded and U.S. troops can withdraw from Afghanistan?”

After just 53 days, Sutton has released her Official Afghanistan Message.  In that letter, dated November 12th, Betty used more than 970 words to respond to, but never actually answer the questions.

The congresswoman’s unwillingness to answer questions is nearing cliché at this point.  She seems to have built an entire career out of political fence riding.  Don’t believe me? Call the congresswoman’s office and ask for her position on [insert issue here].  If you’re lucky, you might get a statement about the representative carefully weighing all opinions and information before making a decision.  More often, a voice at the other end will inform you that your concerns and questions will be forwarded on and someone will look into them.

Today, I am posing a new and more direct line of questions for the congresswoman.

Dear Congresswoman Sutton,

I’ve read your response to the Afghanistan debate, and considering how busy your staff tells me you have been, I appreciate that you found time to address this issue.  Unfortunately, I have been unable to find an answer to the question Jonathan Riskind of the Columbus Dispatch asked you on September 20th.  I am sure this omission was merely an oversight, much like the Constitution question at the August Tele-Town Hall.

I have one simple question for you regarding troop levels in Afghanistan.

Q) YES or NO – Do you support General McChrystal’s urgent request for additional troops in Afghanistan?

As a reminder, in February of 2007, in a speech before the Rules Committee, you wholeheartedly supported the opinions of President George W. Bush’s military commander, Gen. John Abizaid.  You quoted portions of his  Senate Armed Services Committee testimony to support your opposition to the troops serge in Iraq.  For consistency’s sake, I assume you will continue to support the expert opinions of our President’s military commanders, particularly those of General McChrystal who was hand selected for his skills and knowledge by President Obama.

I look forward to your response.

Knock, Knock…

is anybody home?

At the conclusion of our August Tele-Town-Hall, Nichole Francis Reynolds, Sutton’s chief of staff, told us that dialogue on health reform would continue click here.  Silly me, I thought she meant that Sutton’s office would continue the dialogue on health reform.  Sixty-three days later, I see that I was wrong.

Betty Sutton and Nicole Reynolds continue the open dialogue on health reform

So, what happened?  Ms. Reynolds had always been a respectable and honest member of Sutton’s staff.  In fact, there was a time when many in this district felt that if Reynolds said is was, it was.  Those days are clearly past.  Today, Ms. Reynolds is as tainted by power as any other Washington insider.

my3×5s.blogspot.com recently posted a list of unaddressed “dialogue”.  Below are a few of the health reform questions – to view the entire list click here.

  • Why isn’t the economy our top priority instead of another government entitlement program?
  • Rep Sutton said that HR 3200 will “inject competition into the private insurance market.” Why do you not believe that opening interstate commerce for insurance providers prove to be enough competition?
  • How can private insurance providers fairly compete with a government entity which is under no pressure to make a profit, and holds the purse strings; the ability to print money?
  • Do you want health care reform to benefit trial attorneys or patients?
  • You say this “public option” will be funded by premiums alone? Is this a hypothesis?
  • If the “public option” health care plan is so good, why won’t politicians agree to have that as their plan?

To that list I add the following:

  • When the opportunity presented itself, and doing so would not have taken any additional time to implement, why didn’t you accept language that would expressly forbid abortion funding in the health reform bill?  You’ve told us time and time again this bill would not fund abortion, but you refused to vote for language to back that up. Why? read more
  • In 2007 you understood the importance of the Constitution, the separation of powers, and the proper relationship between the government and the people.  Yet today, you seem perfectly comfortable riding roughshod over the founding document.  Why? read more
  • And of course, we cannot leave off the famous constitution question, “Cite the portion of the Constitution which allows the federal government to force people to buy insurance.”  read more

It’s been 63 days now (and counting) and still no dialogue, no answers, and no Sutton.  Instead, our Congresswoman’s offices hand out excesses. Here are a few of my favorites from the Lorain office:

  • “We are very busy trying to answer everyone’s questions.”
  • “We are doing the best we can.”
  • “I’ll pass along your concerns.”
  • “You’re obviously a republican.”
  • “You right wingers don’t know what you are talking about.”
  • “The congresswoman doesn’t have to answer your questions.”

With the House of Representatives poised to vote on Health Reform, Sutton must be feeling some sense of relief that this mess may soon be over.  Sorry to break it to you Betty Sue, we’re only getting started.

Still Waiting…

October 22nd, 2009

countup

We were recently reminded that Congresswoman Betty Sutton has still not provided an answer to Matthew of North Ridgeville’s Tele-Town-Hall question:  Cite the portion of the Constitution which allows the federal government to force people to buy insurance.

In honor of this stupendous delay, we have created the Official Betty Sutton Count-Up To Answers clock!

Is this the same Betty?

Have Betty Sutton's views changed?

Have Betty Sutton's views changed?

Is this really the same Betty Sutton who STILL refuses to answer the constitution question from the August Tele-Town-Hall?

October 24, 2007:

You know, as you point out, when we were elected to Congress, we were elected to represent the people of our districts. Not lobbyists on K Street, and not operatives at the White House, or even the President himself. Our responsibility and our loyalty is to the American people who sent us here, and that means that we have to do the job that they asked us to do. That job is important and we know exactly what that job is, because Article 1 in some ways is a job description.

As you point out, it’s not about really just authority, it’s about responsibilities. And nowhere in that job description in Article 1 does it say that we have to protect the egos or political interests of the executive branch. Nowhere does it say that we have to do only things that the President tells us to do. And nowhere in that job description does it say that Congress answers to anyone but the American people.

So when past Congresses… and there’s sort of been a slope here where past Congresses have ceded legislative power to the executive branch. And when that happens, I feel that Congress is falling down on the job. We’re here tonight to reinvigorate and rededicate ourselves to make sure rededicate ourselves to the functions under Article 1 because it’s so important… from the war in Iraq to all of these judiciary issues. And at this point, I yield back. ~ Congresswoman Betty Sutton

I am pleased to see that in 2007, when President Bush was in office, our Congresswoman had a firm understanding of Article I.  Now, when Sutton tramples our rights, we will know it is not because she is a fool, it is because she just does not give a damn.
